Charity number 203960
The Brigstocke Almshouses were founded in 1891 by Mary Harriette Player Brigstocke. They were set up to house six 'poor aged women' either Spinsters or Widows, inhabitants of the said Parish of Ryde, who were persons of good repute and blameless poverty.
The Brigstocke Almshouses is a Charitable organisation managed by a group of Volunteer Trustees and is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
The building, in Player Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight houses six self-contained flats on two floors with a communal front terrace and rear garden with lawn and flower beds.
To be eligible to apply you must be aged 55 and over and fully capable of independent living. We are not able to accept pets into an Almshouse.
A person appointed as a resident is a beneficiary of the charity, not a tenant. This means that the resident has no legal interest in the accommodation but occupies it under licence with the permission of the trustees. The trustees have the legal rights of owners and have no power to grant a tenancy of an almshouse to any beneficiary.
The governing document of the charity, lodged with the Charity Commission, establishes the beneficiary group from which residents may be appointed. The criteria are usually in accordance with the wishes of the benefactor.
There is a Weekly Maintenance Contribution which replaces rent that is wholly spent on the maintenance and upkeep of the building. It can by paid directly by the applicant or is accepted by the Council to be a payment within the Housing Benefit scheme if the applicant is eligible.
